CHEERS FROM HAILSHAM LIONS!

Geraldine Gurr, president of the Hailsham Lions, would like to extend her grateful thanks to residents of the town and surrounding area for their overwhelming generosity during last year.

This show of kindness has enabled the Lions to help several local organisations, including the hiring of a mini bus for a camping holiday for the 2nd Hailsham scouts, a new pool table for the town’s Youth Café, a donation to the Bakers Farm Park residents for a new defibrillator, and a pallet of bricks to help build a multi-use centre at Pestalozzi Village.

The Lions also supported the Ovarian Cancer campaign by financing the cost of a three-month advertisement to publicise awareness of the disease on Hailsham FM, and made a contribution towards a Music Box for Julie Reid who works with people who are coping with dementia. Members of the Lions also joined in street collections for both Marie Curie and the NSPCC, and were involved in several of the town’s activities including the Christmas Lights switch on.

More recently, they made a donation towards purchasing new equipment for the Healthy Living Club, and during December, opened their very first Charity Book Shop in Market Street, opposite Hailsham’s Open Market, where the opening hours are Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 10am – 4pm.

Without the public’s continued support, the Lions would not have been able to help those in need, and assist others who will ask for help in the future.

Thank you and Cheers!

Guests also enjoyed entertainment from Just George who played a variety of singalong songs for them to enjoy. This tea party is one of two hosted by Hailsham Lions each year; the other is the Christmas party in December at the Charles Hunt Centre.

IT'S A KNOCKOUT !

HAILSHAM LIONS’ JEMINI WINS COMPETITION

The annual Lions’ “It’s A Special Knockout” challenge for those with special needs and learning difficulties in East Sussex was held at Bede’s School, Upper Dicker, on Sunday 13 March 2016. This special event, now in its 16th year, is eagerly awaited by the various clubs and groups who are accompanied by family, friends and carers. The event is organised by Lions Clubs from Hailsham, Battle & Villages, Bexhill, Crowborough, Eastbourne, Hastings, Rye and Uckfield.

Hailsham Lions’ team was Jemini and they won the competition! Not only that but Jemini won the prize, sponsored by Bede’s School, for “Spirit Of The Knockout” awarded for their endeavour, sportsmanship and enthusiasm. However, all participants received “It’s A Special Knockout” medals and certificates.

Prior to the official opening, and to get everybody into an energetic and fun mood, the Sussex Sparks Cheerleaders gave an enthusiastic display which was really enjoyed by all in the hall. Hailsham Town Crier, Lion Geoff Rowe then officially opened the event.

This year 110 contestants across 12 teams played eight games, each of which was organised by a Lions Club, assisted by a number of upper and lower sixth form students from Bede’s School. The games included relay races as well as the ever popular team games including “Dinner For 6” and “Duck Pond”.

The event was supported by the presence of mayors from several local towns, including Hailsham’s Nigel Coltman. Bexhill Lions’ honorary member, Olympic Ice Dancer and Gold Medal winner Jayne Torville OBE attended the event. She mixed with contestants, signed autographs and posed for photographs.

Hailsham Lions are now recruiting members. If anyone is interested in joining the Club to help bring some sunshine into the lives of those less fortunate, and have some fun along the way, they are invited to phone Mike Osborne on 0845 833 9828 (local) or email info@hailshamlions.co.uk.

A LION ROARS AT 90 YEARS OLD

Last weekend Hailsham Lions Club hosted a very special party to celebrate the 90th birthday of their oldest member Mr Lew Lovelady. He joined the Club in 2005 and has remained a tireless worker and guiding force to the membership by putting his heart and soul into all the projects associated with the Club. In fact, he is the very heart of Hailsham Lions. However, at business meetings his quick humour regularly gets him fined by the presiding officer!

Among the many activities he has been involved in over the years, Lew with Joy Bowdery, was the inspiration behind the successful Lions’ annual country fairs, but there is so much more to this extraordinary man than organising ground events. Born in Rochdale, Lancashire, he passed his school examinations with flying colours. In 1944 he joined the Army and in 1953 his service was recognised when he was presented with the Queen’s Colours. The sword that was used during the ceremony was taller than Lew himself!

Never one to be idle, Lew has flown in an airship 600 helicopter, took up micro-light flying and slept in an igloo at Rock Ice. As he enjoyed flying so much, he became a member of the Oxford and Cambridge gliding club. And so it goes on, one challenge after another.

Next year, Lew Lovelady is one of the organisers of a Lion’s Fun Day which will be on 23 July and promises to be great fun for the whole family.

Happy Birthday Mr Lovelady!
